LED poster resolution guide
The size of an LED poster is the same in every type: 640, 960 or 1280 mm wide and 1920 mm high. What changes the resolution is the pixel pitch. The formula is simple: pixels across = width in mm divided by the pitch, and pixels down = 1920 mm divided by the pitch. A 640 × 1920 mm poster has 256 × 768 pixels at P2.5, and 512 × 1536 at P1.25.
- P1.25 to P3.076
- 640, 960, 1280 mm
- 1, 2, 3 posters
Pixels per poster
| Pitch | LED pixels per m² | 640 poster | Total pixels, 640 | 960 poster | 1280 tri-fold open |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| P1.25 | 640,000 | 512 × 1536 | 786,432 | 768 × 1536 | 1024 × 1536 |
| P1.538 | 422,000 | 416 × 1248 | 519,168 | 624 × 1248 | 832 × 1248 |
| P1.86 | 289,000 | 344 × 1032 | 355,008 | 516 × 1032 | 688 × 1032 |
| P2 | 250,000 | 320 × 960 | 307,200 | 480 × 960 | 640 × 960 |
| P2.5 | 160,000 | 256 × 768 | 196,608 | 384 × 768 | 512 × 768 |
| P3.076 | 105,734 | 208 × 624 | 129,792 | 312 × 624 | 416 × 624 |
The tri-fold figures are for the poster open. Pixel counts are counted from the 320 × 160 mm modules, which have a fixed number of pixels at each pitch.
Posters in a cascade
When posters are cascaded, the widths in pixels add up and the height stays the same. For a 640 poster:
| Pitch | Viewing distance from | 1 poster (640 × 1920 mm) | 2 posters (1280 × 1920 mm) | 3 posters (1920 × 1920 mm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| P1.25 | 1 m | 512 × 1536 px | 1024 × 1536 px | 1536 × 1536 px |
| P1.538 | 1.5 m | 416 × 1248 px | 832 × 1248 px | 1248 × 1248 px |
| P1.86 | 2 m | 344 × 1032 px | 688 × 1032 px | 1032 × 1032 px |
| P2 | 2 m | 320 × 960 px | 640 × 960 px | 960 × 960 px |
| P2.5 | 3 m | 256 × 768 px | 512 × 768 px | 768 × 768 px |
| P3.076 | 3 m | 208 × 624 px | 416 × 624 px | 624 × 624 px |
For 960 posters and for the tri-fold see the tables on their pages and in the cascade guide.
What resolution means for the viewer
More pixels draw sharper text, cleaner logos and finer images, and let viewers stand closer. As a guide, the minimum viewing distance in meters is roughly the pitch in millimeters; the pixel pitch guide turns that into a choice.
Shapes of the canvas
One 640 poster is a 1:3 portrait canvas. One 960 poster is 1:2. Two 640 posters are 2:3 (1280 × 1920 mm), three are square (1920 × 1920 mm). An open tri-fold is 2:3, and two tri-fold posters are 4:3.
Design for the native size
Artwork made at the native pixel size looks sharpest. The content formats guide shows the sizes to use.
Questions and answers
How many pixels does a 640 poster have?
256 × 768 at P2.5 (196,608 pixels), 344 × 1032 at P1.86, 320 × 960 at P2, 416 × 1248 at P1.538, 512 × 1536 at P1.25 and 208 × 624 at P3.076.
Is the resolution the same with front and rear service?
Yes, at the same pitch. The cabinet decides service and joining, not the pixel count.
What is the resolution of a 960 poster at P2?
480 × 960 pixels.
What is the resolution of an open tri-fold at P1.86?
688 × 1032 pixels.
Does a taller wall add pixels down?
The height is fixed at 1920 mm. Cascading adds width, not height.
How is resolution different from pitch?
Pitch is the distance between LEDs in millimeters; resolution is the resulting number of pixels on the poster. A finer pitch gives a higher resolution on the same size.
Why does the same size have different pixel counts?
Because the pitch is different: a finer pitch fits more LEDs into the same area.
Which resolution is enough for text?
It depends on the viewing distance; use the pitch guide and test your artwork.
